COTA Fields Ave Garage Renovation
AEC performed an assessment and provided M/E/P/T engineering design services for the renovation of the underutilized Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) building to "like new" condition with new mechanical and electrical systems. The 273,000 square foot facility was built in 1984 and houses bus maintenance and storage space, as well as administrative areas. Design work was completed on a fast-track basis. The building achieved LEED Gold certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Columbus City Hall HVAC and Lighting Renovation
AEC was retained to prepare construction documents for various electrical and mechanical improvements to the historic Columbus City Hall. The overall goal of the project was to renovate the various existing electrical and mechanical systems while at the same time, preserving and complementing the historical features of the building. - AEC performed exterior lighting renovations to the historic building which included the replacement of several large HIB luminaries with LED sources. The system also incorporated color changing strategies that all the City to adjust system parameters for certain annual special events. The LED system reduced exterior façade lighting power consumption by 91%. - AEC also provided documents for interior HVAC and electrical system renovations. The scope of work included upgrades to the building's standpipe and sprinkler system, plumbing drains, venting system and electrical system. Although LEED certification was not required for this project, the design team adhered as close as possible to LEED standards and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman's "Green Memo."

Columbus Fire Station #10
AEC provided engineering design services for the new fire station that replaced the existing Fire Station No. 10. The new 19,000 square foot building includes vehicle bay areas, inspections office, training room, day/dining room, kitchen, dormitory area, shower and locker facilities and maintenance room. AEC designed high efficiency lighting systems with energy saving lighting controls and efficient HVAC systems in order to help earn the project LEED Gold Certification. AEC has provided services such as lighting upgrades, HVAC replacement, and fire alarm system upgrades for many of the Columbus Fire Stations. The building achieved LEED Gold certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

COTA Headquarters Renovation
AEC provided M/E/P/T engineering design services for the renovation of the 100-year- old 33 North High Street office building. Services included a facility assessment and energy audit prior to preparation of the construction documents. New HVAC systems included energy efficient water source heat pumps, a dedicated outside air unit with energy recovery and high efficiency condensing boilers. The lighting system utilized daylight harvesting and widespread use of occupancy sensors and dimming controls. The building achieved LEED Silver certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Franklin County Sheriff’s Training Facility
AEC was part of the team selected to prepare construction documents and provide construction administration services for a new training facility for the Franklin County Sheriff’s office. The new 24,500 square-foot building includes administrative offices, classrooms, a large multi- purpose room, a conference room, fitness and locker rooms and specialty spaces where deputies can train for different scenarios. AEC was responsible for providing HVAC, Power Distribution, Lighting, Fire Alarm, Plumbing, Access Control and Telecommunications engineering design services for this new facility. Construction cost was approximately $5M. The building achieved LEED Silver certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

ODOT Highway Lighting
AEC was retained by the Ohio Department of Transportation to perform highway and bridge lighting upgrades to many roadways throughout Ohio. Some key projects we’ve been involved with include:
ODOT I-75/I- 475 interchange: AEC Provided complex lighting design for over three miles of mainline Interstate and the I-75/I-475 interchange in Toledo, OH, as well as for six bridges, an underpass and a tunnel. Full lighting design, photometric analysis and construction documents were created.
I-270 Highway: AEC designed complex lighting and construction documents for the North Outer belt interchange improvement in Columbus, OH. This project involved complete redesign of the Interstate 270 / S.R. 315 / U.S. 23 interchanges and 1.5 miles of the mainline Interstate 270 highway.
I-75 In Dayton: AEC provided complex lighting design and construction documents for three phases of construction on Interstate 75 through Dayton, OH. This included multiple interchanges, downtown interstate lighting and multiple bridges.

Pickaway Correctional Institution
AEC was part of a team that provided architectural and engineering design services for a new 90,000 square foot medical facility and maximum security segregation housing unit. This new facility includes a 14,200 square foot dialysis clinic, a 16,200 square foot segregation housing unit with 60 maximum security cells, a 160-bed patient care facility, a medical clinic with radiology, dental, and vision exam rooms, and a 1,500 square foot security/administration building. AEC was responsible for providing electrical and technology engineering services for design of the facility’s Electrical Power Distribution, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), Emergency / Critical Power Services, Fire Alarm System, Nurse Call and Monitoring System, Security System (door card readers, key pad, detections, control panels, door access controls), Locking Devices, Position Contact, Release Relay, and Security interface fire alarm system. The construction cost for this project was approximately $17 million.

ODOT Yearly Maintenance Contract
AEC was awarded a yearly MEP Engineering Services contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Services included preparation of engineering reports, drawings, specifications, and plumbing, mechanical and electrical engineering design services for various projects. These engineering services are provided on an “as-needed” basis. A partial list of projects included:
Headquarters Garage Emergency Generator, District 9: AEC provided electrical and mechanical design services, construction drawings, and bid documents for the installation of a standby generator for this ODOT maintenance garage. Responsibilities included evaluating emergency power requirements for standby power with generator size, providing automatic transfer switch and distribution equipment for emergency branch circuits, providing gas supply to generator, reconfiguring existing circuit to emergency branch, and obtaining permits and plan approvals.
HVAC Upgrade, District 10: AEC was responsible for providing mechanical and electrical design services for a replacement of HVAC systems for the ODOT District 10 Traffic Building in Marietta, OH. Goal of the project was to replace all aged equipment and improve distribution, comfort and controls. The restroom lighting and exhaust fan controls were also upgraded to occupancy sensor type (auto-off function for energy conservation).
Maintenance Garage Lighting Retrofit: AEC was responsible for evaluating the existing HID and T12 lighting system, producing payback calculations for upgrading the lighting system, designing high efficiency fluorescent high-bay lighting and controls, providing emergency lighting in conjunction with the generator project, and obtaining permits and plan approvals.

Columbus Municipal Court HVAC Renovations
The City of Columbus planned to renovate a portion of the existing Municipal Court Building in downtown Columbus. The 345,000 sq. ft. building has 19 floors and a basement. For this project, the 7th floor, 8th floor, 17th floor, and 18th floor were to be renovated. AEC provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design and construction services for this renovation project. HVAC system improvements included replacement of an existing high pressure VAV diffuser with variable air volume box with reheat coil, low pressure ductwork and diffuser; upgrade space temperature control with direct digital temperature control. Electrical Services included fire alarm systems, power, and data and telecommunication systems upgrades.
